Habbakuk (Extra Credit)

The Septuagint translation contains some extra material not in the Hebrew text of Daniel. Daniel Chapter 14 of the LXX (see link below) has a story about a very brief meeting of Daniel and Habakkuk while Daniel is in the lion's den.

Suppose Habakkuk really did have a chance to visit Daniel very briefly--long enough only to leave him a verse or two as advice. Cite a couple of verses from Habakkuk that might have been particularly good for Daniel to hear while he was in the Lion's den. Explain why these verses would be good for Daniel, or for others in similar difficulties.

  1. Broc Kilber- I believe the following verses would have been good for Daniel or for anyone in similar circumstances. 2:4,6b,14 "Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but righteousness shall live by faith" "Woe to him who heaps up what is not his own-for how long and loads himself with pledges" "For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea" These verses would remind Daniel how he is supposed to live his life and reaffirm he made the right decision. The second shows that they will pay for the sins that they have committed and the last show's that all will know in the end what Daniel knows, that the Lord rules over all.

    I think these verses would be good for Daniel to hear. Daniel has just been thrown into the lions den because of the God he was following and he may have been regretting his decision, or maybe was just a little dismayed, and this verse is just a great reminder to always be proud to serve God. It's a verse very similar to the bronze bow Psalm, especially the section that state's "he makes my feet like the deer's; he makes me tread on my high places." It's a cool call back to one of the fearless men in all of history, Daniel could have used that.

  3. The best verse Daniel may need to hear would be 3:19 -
    "God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer's ; he makes me tread on my high places. To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments."
    In having faith in the Lord, one can accomplish even seemingly-impossible tasks. Daniel may certainly feel as if he's up against an impossible task, and having nothing else, he may find comfort in the Lord (which would in turn help him even further, which it did).
    Instead of relying on outside follies, Habakkuk can remind Daniel of what would truly matter.

  4. Habakkuk 3:19
    “God, the Lord, is my strength;
    he makes my feet like the deer’s;
    he makes me tread on my high places.”

    This would be a great reminder for Daniel who is facing terrible circumstances and could be at a loss of hope. Yet, Habakkuk gives the encouragement to continue to praise the Lord in tough situations.

  5. The best verse comes from 3:19
    God, the Lord, is my strength. He makes my feet like the deer's. He makes me tread on my high places. This verse sums up for Daniel. Daniel pushed through his struggles in the Den. Use the Lord for strength. The Lord helped him prevail, and for that, Daniel was grateful.
